Intention or Going Through the Motions

Recently, as I somewhat sleepily started into my exercise routine, following along with the cheery instructor on the DVD, I noticed something about the power of intention. That is: when I give full intention to the exercise I get full value and benefit from doing it. Something as simple as a side step, done with intention, exercises muscles in a discernably powerful way. In contrast when just "going through the motions", the effect is not nearly so powerful, effective or enjoyable.

It started me thinking how much of our lives we spend going through the motions, just marking time or "waiting" for the important stuff to come along. Stop to think about it: you kiss a loved one good-bye in the morning. Is it done mindlessly, just going through the motions, or with the intention of expressing love and affection? Handling a customer issue: Done with intention, it becomes an opportunity to cement a relationship, sell additional products or services, or simply make a powerful statement about your commitment to service. Done as a mindless routine, it's just another item on the "to do" list that leaves the customer feeling undervalued and ripe for stealing away by someone more attentive.

Even as I sit here and write, if I become aware of the experience of writing, with the intention of being fully present through what I write, not simply trying to crank out one more weekly message, it makes a difference. The words come to life. I come to life. Hopefully you, the reader, come to life.

Today I challenge you: whatever you do, do it with the intention of full engagement. Do it with purpose. Do it with energy, passion, commitment. And watch what a difference it makes in how you feel about even ordinary routines. If indeed, life is not a dress rehearsal, then give your best performance in all you do. At the end of the day you'll enjoy taking a bow and celebrating to your own internal applause.

Intention or going through the motions...what will it be for you?
