Backyard Ponds

Backyard ponds are ponds installed in the backyards of homes where one can view the pond from the decks or patios. These are usually small ponds that are not bigger than two feet in radius. Apart from providing an aesthetic experience to the family, backyard ponds are also valuable for the birds, plants, fish, insects, frogs, and other animal and plant life that inhabit them. Backyard ponds are made in barrels or other patio containers. Having a backyard pond is a sure way of attracting wildlife, which can be both fun and educational.

The backyard pond should be placed on soil that is elevated so that excess water will stay away from the pond and not flow into it. For scenic purposes, the pond should be installed so that it blends well with the immediate environment. A habitat for frogs and birds can be provided by landscaping the area around the pond. Since sunlight is critical for the growth of pond plants, the pond should have sufficient exposure to the sun. Installing the pond next to sources of water and power is essential if the pond is being fitted with lights, a pump, a filter, or any other such devices. For homes without the space for a built-in earthen pond, other options include large water bowls or a tub pond placed on the patio.

Installing a built-in earthen pond should be done when the ground is not frozen or extremely dry. Pond liners that prevent water from flowing into the soil are essential in installing backyard ponds. Suitable liners specially manufactured for ponds or even pools are available in stores that sell pond and pool supplies.

Maintenance and safety are two aspects of backyard ponds that need special attention. While maintenance can be time consuming, excessive cleaning can have adverse effects on the pond. Safety aspects pertain primarily to ensuring that children do not have access to the pond without adult supervision. If these critical aspects are taken care of, having a backyard pond can be a very satisfying and relaxing experience.
